Points of Light - Gilberto de Abreu
Born Jan 21, 1953 in Espinosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil
Exhibition Dates: October 12 –December 12

This collection of oil paintings on canvas can be divided into three categories: the first are human portraits; the second series feature my vision of human emotions as they would be represented collectively; and the third portrays my hometown at nightfall, illuminated, becoming the female form.

The First
These human portraits illustrate the diverse forms and colors of the Brazilian people. They are timeless characters, realistically or metaphorically suggesting people universal to all societies, over all time. Bright and colorful portraits contrast the suffering natural to the arid landscape of their actual lives.

The Second
These paintings represent urban emotions through scenes of human conglomeration. Points of light illuminate points of life, and together, the collection of human forms brings light to an amalgam of human emotion.

The Third
From a distance, these night-time landscapes embody the female form, illuminated by points of light. This series depicts a real city through a variety of imaginary forms. What is real is the city itself, and what is imaginary is that each point of light becomes an individual element of sensuality and imagination, an integral part of the whole, making up the overall landscape, which represents the human form, the female form.
